I visited Twycross Zoo with my husband, Derek, and had the opportunity of meeting with Dr Sharon Redrobe OBE, CEO of the zoo. Dr Redrobe talked about the importance of modern zoos and the impressive conservation work carried out there. Zoos do far more than provide a home for animals. They are at the very forefront of conservation in all its forms, which include a wide range of zoo activities, from training the conservationists of tomorrow, to breeding endangered species.
Twycross Zoo is visited by many in my constituency and is part of a network of zoos that deliver over one million formal education sessions. It was recently part of a project collecting genetic materials of endangered species, for future research. This type of scientific research will help conservation efforts and allow visitors to experience incredible wildlife for generations to come.
