Recently, the Prime Minister, along with his Australian and US counterparts, signed a new AUKUS deal whereby each country will deepen its defence information sharing and military assistance by creating a new submarine fleet using cutting-edge technology to counter China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
In fantastic news for Mid Derbyshire, the reactors for these new submarines will be made by Rolls-Royce Submarines here in Derbyshire.
This news means huge investment and the creation and support of thousands of jobs, both at Rolls-Royce and right across the UK supply chain.
It also provides a fantastic opportunity for the 200 apprentices each year graduating from the Rolls-Royce Nuclear Skills Academy in Derby to work on a project crucial for the security of the UK and its global allies for many decades to come.
Last week, I raised the issue with the Leader of the House of Commons, and you can watch the full clip here.
