Yesterday I visited an amazing small business called Engineered Learning Ltd which is based on Alfreton Road in Derby. Engineered Learning Ltd is a Chesterfield and Derby based training provider specialising in BTEC accredited Fabrication and Welding skills development at KS3/4 and post 16 stages. It is currently working at full capacity over 3 industry standard workshops delivering BTEC accredited engineering work experience to 14-16 year olds both in mainstream education and as a part of an alternative provision package for those who have been excluded, or who are at risk of exclusion, from school.
I was genuinely impressed by what I saw and it is an amazing facility for young people whereby mainstream education is not for them. The company are teaching them valuable engineering skills and obviously this is an area where there is a skills shortage. The company is focussed on teaching these young people a skill that hopefully will help turn their lives around instead of one where they could end up without an education and possibly involved in crime. I saw some of the projects that the students had completed and heard stories of the hard lives that these young people had suffered.
Earlier this year, they were invited to be a part of the 2019 Parliamentary Review of Education Services and an article on this can be viewed here:
