I was delighted this week to attend the parliamentary launch of Rolls-Royce’s Nuclear Skills Academy. This is a fantastic initiative from Rolls-Royce Submarines consisting of a skills academy dedicated to nuclear training, as well as a 10-year commitment to Derby and Derbyshire.
Rolls-Royce Submarines has committed to 200 new apprenticeships every year for at least the next ten years, at the Raynesway plant in Mid Derbyshire. This is a fantastic investment and a brilliant opportunity for young people across Derbyshire to gain higher education qualifications whilst working at Rolls-Royce. The apprentices will also have the opportunity, through the Skills Academy, to be supported by industry and education experts including the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, the National College for Nuclear, the University of Derby and the City Council.
As well as attending the parliamentary launch, I also met privately with Rolls-Royce directors to discuss the Raynesway facility, and the impact that these fantastic plans will have on young people in my constituent.
It was great to be able to launch this programme in Parliament, reinforcing Derby as the home of advanced UK engineering for decades to come.
