Alstom employs many of my constituents and for 185 years has been a vital part of Derby’s manufacturing industry, as well the city’s rail heritage. It faces short-term gaps in its order books and as a result, the company are consulting employees on job losses. This is worrying news for all concerned, and I have been working with Derbyshire colleagues and the Secretary of State for Transport, Mark Harper, to find a solution to what is a very complex legal matter.
As usual, Labour has been playing political games, so today I asked the Rail Minister, Huw Merriman, to confirm that Conservative MPs in Derbyshire have been working hard with the Transport Secretary to find a solution to the problems at Alstom.
I am meeting again with the Transport Secretary later today and hope to have an update to provide shortly after.
