My Marriage Bill, ending child marriage in England & Wales, will be debated again in Parliament on 25 February.
Child marriages often take place during the school summer holidays, with children taken to be married in other countries. My bill will make this illegal in England and Wales, setting a blanket minimum age of 18 for all marriages, whether they are registered or not.
I asked the Education Minister to meet with me to discuss how the legislation will be rolled out, and how children and teachers can learn to spot warning signs of child marriage in schools and report them.
The Minister confirmed that provisions are already in place to safeguard children from potential forced marriages, and I will be meeting with him to discuss the issue in relation to child marriages.
