I was delighted to attend the celebration of the opening of the Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill, in the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Derby Silk Mill is the site of the world’s first factory, and the Museum of Making explores Derby’s history of industry and creativity, opening in the tri-centenary year of the Silk Mill.
The collections include the world’s smallest engine, run using a human hair, and a seven tonne Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine. Not only will the Museum of Making be of great interest for the general public, but it will also deliver educational programmes to schools and to lifelong learners. Thank you to all the volunteers, organisers, donors and exhibitors at the Museum of Making for helping to create yet another cultural landmark in Derbyshire.
Derby’s cultural and industrial heritage would make it the perfect choice for UK City of Culture 2025, which I am lobbying for in Parliament. I raised the issue in the House of Commons recently, and am working with local partners to try to convince the Government of the importance of Derby’s bid. See the full video on my twitter page.
