Unemployment in Mid-Derbyshire in bottom 5% of the country
Mid-Derbyshire has maintained its place in the bottom five percent nationally for unemployment with January’s unemployment number standing at just 313, down 56 on the same time last year. Youth unemployment has continued to fall as well, falling from 1.1% in January 2015, to 0.9% in January 2016. The good news means that out of 650 constituencies nationally, Mid-Derbyshire has the 620th lowest unemployment rate, going from 3% unemployment in May 2010 to 0.9% in January 2016.
The national picture is also bright. The newly released figures from the independent Office of National Statistics show a record number of people in work and unemployment and youth unemployment reaching near 10-year lows. The employment rate, which stands at 74.1% of people aged 16-64, is the highest in history.
Wages are also rising – average weekly total pay in Great Britain increased by 1.9% in the final quarter of 2015, compared with the previous year. Thanks to low inflation (0.1%) it means more money in the pockets of working people.
Pauline Latham OBE MP said: “Today’s unemployment figures are very welcome and I am proud Mid-Derbyshire has maintained its place in the bottom 5 per cent of the country for unemployment. Three-quarters of all new jobs created since 2010 have been full-time but I am not resting on my laurels. I want to help more people find work and will be hosting a Jobs Fair for those looking for work in Mid-Derbyshire soon”.
