Pauline Latham OBE MP welcomed Lawn Primary School to Parliament when joining the visiting group of the school council at the Parliament Education Centre to discuss her work as an MP and answer questions from the students.
The School had been visiting Parliament as part of the Parliament Education Service programme which sees schools from all constituencies come to Parliament to learn how it works and take part in mock elections to understand how MP’s are elected.
Mrs Latham presented the council, representing years 3-6 , with certificates for their visit and explained what she does as a Member of Parliament before inviting questions from the group.
The inquisitive youngsters asked a wide range of questions from what jobs Mid-Derbyshire’s MP had before becoming and MP, the history of Big Ben and her favourite sport. Mrs Latham also explained how debates worked in the House of Commons and that she wished she could spend longer in the constituency but thought that being an MP for Mid-Derbyshire was the best job in the world.
Pauline Latham OBE MP said: “It was a delight to welcome Lawn Primary School to Parliament today. They once again asked thoughtful questions, even getting me to reveal I once played the violin….badly! I hope all the school councillors and teachers enjoyed their day out, learning so much more by visiting Parliament than they could ever do by reading about it”.
