Pauline Latham OBE MP has welcomed the news that unemployment in Mid-Derbyshire has continued to fall. The figure now stands at 297 people, just 0.7% of the population and 109 lower than in October 2014.
The trend is matched across Derby and Derbyshire where the number of claimants is 7,820 which is 3,510 fewer than 12 months ago.
In Derby the number of people claiming job-seekers allowance fell in October by 9.8% in a month, from 2,630 to 2,373, the lowest figure since records began.
Young people in Mid-Derbyshire are also faring better with youth unemployment, those aged between 18-24, 45 lower than in October 2014.
Across the country youth unemployment has fallen to its lowest level since early 2006 with young people increasingly able to take opportunities such as apprenticeships and job training programmes.
Tackling youth unemployment is an issue Pauline Latham has been vocal on in Parliament. She recently praised the work being done by community organisations to help young people into work highlighting the training and support given by groups such as the Drop Inn in Belper.
Commenting on the good jobs figures Pauline Latham OBE MP said: “I am very happy to see unemployment in my Mid-Derbyshire constituency and across the region continue to fall. Behind every one of these figures is someone who is now enjoying the security of a job and the satisfaction of bringing a pay packet home. This does not mean we can be complacent. More needs to be done and I think the policies of this Government will continue to deliver for people”.
